  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Laurence Hynes Halloran, 1765-1831, clergyman, schoolmaster and journalist, was transport to New South Wales in 1819 for counterfeiting a frank. He opened the Sydney Grammar School in 1820; he also published and edited The Gleaner, April-September 1827.

    Henry Halloran, son of Laurence was under-secretary in the Colonial Secretary's Department 1866-1878 and a New South Wales Commissioner for exhibitions in Philadelphia, Melbourne, Paris and Sydney 1875-1880. He also published verses in newspapers and magazines.

    Extracts from his trial at Old Bailey and various letters and appeals addressed mainly to Lord Sidmouth, Secretary of State for the Home Office, a denial that he challenged Solomon Levey to a duel, letter to McLeay enclosing prospectus for The Gleaner (removed to C.P.B.) and biographical note.

    b. Henry Halloran, 5 May 1878-21 May 1884.

    Papers relating to his appointment as a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, the Paris Universal Exhibition 1878 and letter from Buckingham Palace thanking him for a memorial poem.
