  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William Elyard, 1771-1853? came to Sydney in 1821 with his wife and children, William 23 May 1804-1865; Alfred, b.1806; Elizabeth b.1809; Arthur b.1814; and Samuel, 1817-1910; on the John Bull convict ship as ship's surgeon. He was superintendent of Carter Barracks until ca. 1823 when commenced working Wellington Farm on Stonequarry Creek, Picton. He was Coroner for the County of Camden, 1825. William junior and Samuel worked in the colonial Secretary's office, William was Under-Secretary 1856-1865. Samuel was retired in 1868, but continued his artistic activities. He was also active in religious work from 1848. Alfred was for a time Chief Clerk of the Supreme Court. Arthur farmed; Elizabeth married John G. Colyer. Brundee Orchard Farm near Nowra, Avondale Farm at Illawarra and a property at Jervis Bay were later worked by the family. They also owner Burwood Cottage and a property at Balmain.
