    Ellis reached Sydney on 25 July 1875. He was assistant master at Burwood in September-December, seems to have spent the whole of 1876 as a private tutor with the Platts near Carcoar, spent the year 1877 teaching at Grafton and 1878 teaching at Sparke's Creek and Junction Creek, near scone. He comments on Australians, pages 36-40 of the diary and described reading at the Public Library of New South Wales, pages 97, 119-120, 123

    Diary 1875-1890

    Item 1, pt 1
    A few pencil notes by Henry Havelock Ellis in early part of diary appear to have been made some years later, only 1 is dated (page 99). Many entries in later part of diary refer to Olive Schreiner

    Poems, bills for books, bills for food at Sparke's Creek, and draft prospectus of school at Grafton. These were between the pages of the diary when received, either pinned or loose.

    Item 1, pt 2
    The diary records mental and spiritual experiences, not day to day occurrences. A condensed account of these experiences, with comments, appears in his My Life, 1940 espec. pages 91-103. The poems include sonnets, songs and ballads and part of a projected poem in blank verse
