  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Ensign Alexander Huey was a junior officer of the 73rd Regiment of Foot at the time of the voyages described in the journal. After brief service with the 73rd, Huey retired to become a painter of miniature portraits. It was probably largely because of his admiration for the artist John William Lewin that Huey determined to leave the army and become a professional painter.

  • Scope and Content
A journal kept by Alexander Huey describing two voyages he undertook between 1809 and 1811, as an officer in the 73rd Regiment of Foot. The journal commences on 5 May 1809 when the 73rd Regiment of Foot received the order to march from Collwell Barracks, Isle of Wight, to Yarmouth, and there to board the ships “Hindostan” and “Dromedary”. It provides a daily account of the voyage and includes information pertaining to latitude and soundings, weather conditions, places visited, drills, incidents and co-travellers who included Governor Lachlan Macquarie and Judge Advocate Ellis Bent. The entry for 1 January 1810 records how the Regiment landed at Sydney and transferred to Grose Farm Camp. The first part of the diary concludes with the entry for 10 April 1810. The diary resumes on 29 October 1810, when Huey received dispatches from Governor Macquarie, and describes the journey home via New Zealand on the “Atalanta”. The final entry is dated 21 February 1811, beyond Cape Horn.
