- Scope and ContentA framed oil painting of an Aboriginal man standing in front of a group of five seated Aboriginal women wrapped in blankets. It shows the group at camp by a small fire beside a rocky outcrop with a dog, possibly a dingo, lying next to the woman at far right. The woman, third from the right, is painted from the back and is wrapped in a blanket marked 'B O [i.e. Board of Ordnance] / 1849 / 2.[?]' The male figure wears a coat to his knees over a loosely buttoned shirt and probably a straw hat.

The vendor suggested that artist is possibly Captain Otway whose work is known from the painting 'Native about to throw a spear at kangaroos' in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection (NK863) at the National Library of Australia. However stylistically this very competently executed painting is much closer to the work of Thomas Balcombe.
