  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Mark Valentine St. Leon, family historian, has researched the early history of circus in Australia. Mark St. Leon's great-great-grandfather, John Leon Jones, founded the St. Leon Circus in 1854. John Jones, alias John St. Leon. was Australia's first equestrian performer. The St. Leon name was originally adopted for professional reasons, but by the 1890's had become the accepted family name. John St. Leon died in 1903, leaving two of his sons, Augustus St. Leon and Walter St. Leon continuing in the circus business. In tracing the history of St. Leon's Circus, Mark St. Leon has documented information about other early circuses and circus families, in particular, James Henry Ashton, founder of Ashton's Circus.
