  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    David Parkes was a private in the 15th Battalion (Infantry) and served in Gallipoli where he was killed in action on the 9 May 1915. He is buried at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. (Australian War Memorial).

    His father was William Parkes, nephew to Sir Henry Parkes.

    These next-of-kin plaques were mostly issued in 1922.
  • Scope and Content
    Memorial plaque honouring David Parkes. Issued to next-of-kin of servicemen killed in the war. It shows Britannia holding a trident and standing with a lion. In her left hand she holds an oak wreath above a rectangular tablet bearing Parkes' name. Two dolphins swim around Britannia and at the bottom a second lion is tearing apart the German eagle. Around the rim are the words "He died for freedom and honour". Designed by Edward Carter Preston. It is housed in its original folder.
