Miss Ellen Clarke, founder and principal from 1882 to 1893 of Normanhurst School, at Ashfield. Normanhurst was among the oldest private schools for girls in New South Wales, founded in 1882 many brilliant students have passed through its class-rooms. From a small beginning it had developed into imposing dimensions, and in the grounds there were two houses, one dedicated to Mrs Stiles and the other to Miss Jennings, who was princinal at the college.

Miss Ellen Clarke, came from England to start a school for young ladies in Ashfield. The school known as Normanhurst School began in a cottage in Bland Street. Although it was officially non-denominational, Normanhurst maintained strong links with St John's. The school grew, and moved premises to Orpington Street, but eventually closed down in 1941.
