Sydney George Ure Smith (1887-1949), publisher and artist, studied art at Julian Ashton's Sydney Art School. He later became interested in etching and under the guidance of Miss Eirene Mort developed considerable skill in the technique.

This collection of etchings by Sydney Ure Smith comprises 135 prints, arranged into 19 sets, chiefly of old buildings mainly in and around Sydney between 1914-1926. According to the entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography Ure Smith's "... choice of subject-matter was partly an attempt to foster conservation of Australia's colonial heritage."
