Captain Charles Harold Peters, a managing bookseller of Melbourne, Victoria enlisted aged 27, 21 July 1915, and embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A54 Runic, 20 June 1916. He served with the 38th Battalion, A.I.F. in France where he was awarded the Military Cross and Bar for his bravery at Armentieres, 31 Dec. 1916 and his actions during operations at the Hindenburg Line, Sept.-Oct. 1918. He was detached for duties with the 57th Battalion, Mar. 1917 and as instructor, Sept. 1917. He returned to Australia on HMAT Ypiringa and was discharged 19 Aug. 1919 - Scope and ContentIncludes letters describing life in the trenches and in billets, raiding parties in which he was a successful leader, also two essays he contributed to the Australian Imperial Forces War Records Competition, notes for lectures and letters from the Australian War Memorial
