    Walter Edward Gillett, an orchardist of Kalamunda, Western Australia was born in Oxfordshire, England and enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces on 6 Mar. 1916 at the age of 42. He embarked from Fremantle on board HMAT A66 Uganda, 20 Sept. 1916 and served in France from Dec. 1917 with the 51st Battalion. He was promoted to lance-corporal Feb. 1917 and later to sergeant. He transferred to a clerical position in 1917 and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1919. He served at the A.I.F. Headquarters, London from Feb. 1919 to May 1920, returning to Australia on the Kigoma, 30 July 1920
