    David Adie Whitehead of Mosman, Sydney was born in Leith, Scotland. He graduated from Royal Military College, Duntroon and was appointed lieutenant in the Permanent Military Forces on 4 Apr. 1916 aged 19. He embarked for France on A24 HMAT Benalla, 1 May 1916 and served with 9th Brigade Machine Gun Company. He was mentioned in despatches, Apr. 1917, promoted from Lieutenant to Captain Oct. 1917 and commanded the 23rd Machine Gun Company on the Western Front. In Dec. 1917 he was awarded the Military Cross for bravery in leading his Battery of 8 machine guns to a forward barrage position under heavy fire. In May 1918 he was wounded in action. He was awarded the Croix de Geurre, Jan. 1919. David Whitehead also served in World War II, enlisting in Mar. 1940, and commanded the 26th Infantry Brigade, 9th Division and 32nd Battalion in the Second Battle of El Alamein and in operations in New Guinea and Tarakan, Borneo. He was awarded a D.S.O. at Alamein, awarded a C.B.E in Mar. 1945 and was twice mentioned in despatches
