- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
Donald Percival Wells, cashier of Tighes' Hill, Newcastle, New South Wales, enlisted at the age of 20 on 4 Sept. 1915 and embarked from Sydney with the 30th Battalion on HMAT A35 Berrima, 17 Dec. 1915. He was promoted to Captain 19 Aug. 1916. He was wounded and captured at Bullecourt, France, on 11 April 1917 and admitted to hospital at Karlsruhe, Germany. He was a prisoner of war at Freiburg camp in Germany until he was sent to Switzerland 26 Dec. 1917. Captain Wells was repatriated to England on 14 June 1918 and embarked to return to Australia on 23 Sept. 1918. - Scope and ContentDescribes life in prison camps, the food, medical treatment for his injured foot, escape attempts, letters he received from home and the social life in the camp. A portion of this diary was concealed in the sole of his boot to be smuggled out of Germany and entries, particularly for September, suffered damage
