  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Isaac Nathan (1792-1864) emigrated to Australia from England in 1841 and quickly dominated the Australian musical scene as a composer, teacher, organist, conductor and publisher. He composed the comic opera 'Merry freaks in troublous times' in 1843 to a libretto by Charles Nagel on the life of Charles II. Written just two years after Nathan’s arrival in Australia, this opera was the first to be composed in Australia, although never performed publicly. Nathan published the complete vocal score of 'Merry freaks in troublous times' in Sydney in 1851.
