The Hibernian Australasian Catholic Friendly Society was formed in 1871 by the amalgamation of the Irish Australian Catholic Benefit Society of Melbourne, the Ballarat Hibernian Society and the Albury Catholic Benefit Society. In 1880 the Sydney District was formed; this then became known as the New South Wales District. In 1991 the Hibernian Australasian Catholic Friendly Society changed its name to the Hibernian Friendly Society.
