    Verdi George Schwinghammer, clerk of Byron Bay, New South Wales was 25 years old when he embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT A55 Kyarra, 17 Nov. 1916. He was attached to the 42nd Battalion A.I.F., formed with men from Northern Rivers, New South Wales, and southern Queensland. He served in France June 1917-Apr. 1919, was wounded and spent some time in hospital in France and England before returning to Australia 16 June 1919

    Diary describes voyage from Brisbane to England on the troopship Kyarra, Nov. 1916-Jan. 1917, action in France June 1917-Apr. 1919, battles, including the battle of Broodseinde, Somme and the Hindenburg line, leave in England, Paris and Brussels and return to Australia in Aug. 1919.
