    Lieutenant C. H. Read, clerk of Randwick, Sydney enlisted in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve on 11 Aug. 1914, for service in the tropics with the combined naval and military expedition, raised for a term of six months. He sailed on H.M.A.S. Berrima, 19 Aug. 1914 for New Guinea, returning to Sydney 18 Feb. 1915. He enlisted with the A.I.F., Naval Bridging Train, 9th Reinforcements on 11 Feb. 1916, aged 36 years and embarked on Transport A70 Ballarat, 18 Feb. 1916 to serve in Egypt before returning to Australia on HT Bulla, 27 Sept. 1917
