    Gunner A. R. Pyke, bush labourer of Paddington, New South Wales, enlisted at the age of 26, 17 Sept. 1914 and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic, 22 Dec. 1914. He served in the 8th Australian Army Service Corps, Ammunition Section, in Egypt, 1 Feb. -13 May 1915 and Gallipoli 17 May-26 June 1915, 2 Oct.-19 Nov. 1915. He was an instructor of signalling and staff duty work in France 3 Sept. 1916-27 May 1917. Ill health caused his return to Sydney, N.S.W. on HT Demosthenes, 27 Sept. 1917. He took up land in a Soldier Settlement area at Clinton near Inverell, Nov. 1917
