    Joseph Henry Pye, a foreman baker of Burwood, Sydney, was born in Mudgee, N.S.W. He enlisted in 1914 at the age of 42 and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A35 Berrima, 22 Dec. 1914. He served with the 5th Divisional Train, 5th Field Bakery in Egypt and France. He was promoted to honorary captain March 1917 and returned to Australia 14 Feb. 1919 on the Somali.
    The 5th Australian Field Bakery was formed at Tel-el-Kebir on 5 March 1916 with Capt. J. H. Pye in charge. It was transferred to Rouen, France on 3 July 1916. On 29 Apr. 1918 it was amalgamated with the 4th A.I.F. Bakery, and on 31 Aug. 1918, with the 1st and 3rd Bakeries.
