  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Lieutenant John Keith Probert, an engineering fitter of Broken Hill, New South Wales enlisted in the Australian Expeditionary Force at the age of 20, 21 Aug. 1914, and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A3 Orvieto, 21 Oct. 1914 to serve with the 2nd Field Engineers in Egypt and Gallipoli. He landed at Gallipoli 25 Apr. 1915 and was promoted to sergeant there. Ill health caused his return to Australia on the Karoola, 2 Dec. 1915. He again embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A60 Aeneas, 30 Oct. 1917 and served in France and Belgium 23 Mar. 1918-12 Feb. 1919 with 5th Pioneer Battalion. He was wounded in action, June 1918 and returned to Adelaide, South Australia on the Argyllshire, 18 Sept. 1919
