Sergeant J. F. O'Donnell, a sporting journalist of Marrickville, Sydney was born in Bungaree, Victoria and enlisted at Sydney aged 30, 18 May 1916. He left for France on the Ceramic, 7 Oct. 1916 and served in France and Belgium with the C Company of the 30th Battalion, 8th Brigade, 5th Division, A.I.F. He was wounded in action, 17 Mar. 1917, hospitalised in England and gassed 20 Apr. 1918, and was invalided to Australia on the Khyber 31 Mar. 1919. He was a contributor to The Digger - Scope and ContentDiary describes battles in France and Belgium, and includes descriptions of billeting with a French family over Christmas, and of boxing tournaments he organised. The volume was also used as a notebook for his writings 18 May 1916-Apr. 1918, including poems and accounts of Bapaume, 17 Mar. 1917
