    Sergeant Ernest Murray, an engineers mechanic was born in Surry Hills, Sydney and enlisted in the A.I.F. on 27 Aug. 1914, aged 33. He embarked from Sydney on board Transport A19 Afric, 18 Oct. 1914 and served in the 1st Field Company Engineers in Egypt, Gallipoli, France and Belgium. He was awarded the Military Medal and a bar for his bravery during the operations of 25-26th Sept. 1917 at Polygon Wood, France. He was wounded in action 30 Jan. 1918 and hospitalised in England, before returning to Australia on the Boonah, 21 Sept. 1918
