John Patrick MacNamara, an agricultural student of Coff's Harbour, New South Wales was born in Mirboo, Victoria and enlisted at Casula aged 19, 2 Feb. 1916. He embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board RMS Mooltan, 19 Aug. 1916 and served in 1st Light Horse Brigade, and later as a wireless operator with no. 1 squadron, Australian Flying Corps. He was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in action with Anzac Mounted Division in Egypt, 24 August 1917. He returned to Australia on Port Sydney, 4 March 1919 and was discharged 29 May 1919. - Scope and ContentDiary describes voyage to Egypt on board R.M.S. Mooltan, 19 Aug. - 21 Sept. 1916, training as a signaller in Egypt 22 Sept. 1916-5 Apr. 1917, and experiences in Palestine 6 Apr. 1917-9 Nov. 1918
