    William John Rusden Hill, a journalist from Auckland, New Zealand, joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force at the outbreak of war and held the ranks of Lance Corporal and Second Lieutenant. He served in Samoa and at Gallipoli and died of wounds in France on 5 September 1918, aged 36. Hill was awarded the Military Cross for bravery and leadership.
