William Thomas Alma Hennell, a painter of Petersham, Sydney, New South Wales was born in Ballarat, Victoria and enlisted aged 18, 3 June 1916. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A40 Ceramic, 7 Oct. 1916 and served as a private with the 19th Battalion, B Company, A.I.F. in France 28 Dec. 1916-22 May 1919. He returned to Sydney on the Karmala, 18 Aug. 1919 - Scope and ContentDescribes voyage from Sydney to France 6 Oct.-28 Dec. 1916, experiences in France, 28 Dec. 1916-22 May 1919 and voyage back to Sydney
