  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Anthony de Morleville, kitchenhand, enlisted in Sydney, 4 June 1918, after which the enlistment was cancelled due to uncertain nationality, 28 Aug. 1918 (Ref: National Archives of Australia). He stated on his enlistment form he was born in the Channel Islands, Jersey, 2 Jan. 1897. According to information he gave to the Mitchell Library when offering his diary, the author was a native of Belgium and at the outbreak of war fought in the Belgium army for seven months, was severely wounded, invalided to England and then to the United States. He paid passage to Australia, arriving Nov. 1917 and enlisted in the AIF, 16 Nov. 1917, was sent with reinforcements 11 Jan. 1918, 2nd Mar. 1918 with 3rd Brigade, was wounded at Villers Bretonneux in April 1918, sent to hospital in England and later to Australia, arriving Dec. 1918. He stated 'military authorities will repatriate to Belgium'.
