James Lindsell, a storeman packer of Auburn, New South Wales was born in San Francisco, U.S.A. He enlisted at the age of 20, Dec. 1914 and embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A49 Seang Choon, 11 Feb. 1915, serving in the 3rd Reinforcements, 13th Battalion alongside his father, also James Charles Lindsell, who returned to Australia 11 Apr. 1916. His brother Richard Paul Lindsell enlisted May 1918 and returned 23 July 1919.
James Lindsell served in Gallipoli, Egypt, France and Belgium with the 14th Machine Gun Company, as a soldier and an instructor. He was wounded three times, at Gallipoli 21 Aug. 1915, near Bullecourt, France, 15 May 1917, and at Polygon Wood, Belgium, 26 Sept. 1917. He returned to Australia 13 June 1918
