  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

This painting depicts the landing of the crew of the Blossom on Pitcairn Island in December 1825... The commander of the Blossom was Frederick William Beechey. His brother, Richard Brydges Beechey was also aboard as midshipman. In his account of the voyage, Narrative of a voyage to the Pacific and the Beering's Strait (1831), Frederick acknowledged his brother's devotion of leisure time to drawing". This painting is most likely based on the engraving, Landing in Bounty Bay, published in Narrative of a voyage .. and itself based on an original drawing by Frederick. Because of this acknowledgment of the original drawing as its source the painting itself has in the past also been attributed to Frederick. The artist is, however more likely to be Frederick's brother Richard. While Richard similarly pursued a career in the Navy he also became a successful and skilled maritime artist. There is no evidence that Frederick painted in oils, whilst from the 1830s to the 1880s Richard was exhibiting oil paintings in London's Royal Academy of Arts.
