Unsigned; the painting was earlier attributed to Peacock. However comparison with a signed painting by Backler (Port Macquarie, ML 354) showed stylistic similarities suggesting they were by the same artist. Dated and titled from previous label (removed 1966 and filed in old labels file). Old label read 'Port Macquarie, 1833, G.E. Peacock. Presented by Thos. Dick, Esq. in memory of his parents'. This information probably came from donor, correspondence not traced. - Attributions / conjectures
Attributed, until cleaned, January 1965, to George Edward Peacock. - Date note
Dated from comparison with HC Allport drawings of Port Macquarie of 1839 (ML PXD 86), which show the town in a similar state of development to this oil. - Subject
