  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Frederick Mann, (1819-1907), explorer and surveyor, was born in Lewisham, London. He served four years in the military before joining the Trigonometrical Survey of Britain. He left Britain in 1841 arriving in Sydney on 6 March 1842. He was appointed as a licensed surveyor on 1848 in the Surveyor-General's Department and posted to the Counties of Murray, St Vincent and Argyle. He produced reports which were later published in the Proceedings of the Geographical Society of Australasia, as well as several articles for Sydney newspapers regarding Australian history and Aboriginals.

    The document contains introductory notes as well as a listing of Aboriginal vocabulary of the Cammeraigal people. The information provided by J. F. Mann was obtained from Long Dick (son of Bungaree and Cora 'Queen' Gooseberry), a native of the Cammeray Tribe (Cameragal or Cammeraigal).
