Purchased with another equine portrait by Thomas Balcombe, Plover (Age 5) (ML1407), from Sullivan + Strumpf Fine Art, February 2008. • General note

This painting and ML1407 are identically framed in wooden frames with corner detail, and painted in gold, now very faded. Frames are possibly original.
Possibly exhibited in the 1849 Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts exhibition where four equine portraits of celebrated race horses were exhibited by Mr F Downes: Sydney Morning Herald 2 June 1849 p.3. JF Downes owned Jorrocks and Plover.
Known as the "Iron gelding," Jorricks (1833-1860) is credited as the oldest winning thoroughbred in Australian history winning his last race at the age of 18. He won every important race in Sydney at least once, his greatest racing feats on the track at Homebush - the centre of Sydney racing at the time. Most of his career was based at the Hawkesbury and a memorial stone at the R.A.A.F. Richmond Air Base marks his grave.
