  • Collection history
    Purchased with another equine portrait by Thomas Balcombe, Old Jorrocks (Age 16) (ML1408), from Sullivan + Strumpf Fine Art, February 2008. The provenance of the works is given as the Jardine family of Queensland, perhaps descendants of brothers Frank and Alexander Jardine who settled in Cape York in 1864.

  • General note

    This painting and ML1408 are identically framed in wooden frames with corner detail, and painted in gold, now very faded. Frames are possibly original.
    Possibly exhibited in the 1849 Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts exhibition where four equine portraits of celebrated race horses were exhibited by Mr F Downes: Sydney Morning Herald 2 June 1849 p.3. JF Downes owned Jorrocks and Plover.

    On verso is affixed printed label reading: Ackermann & Cos prepared Millboards... Strand London. Inscribed in crayon on label: "Plover" age 5 [Bromelton?] Station 18[]8
