  • General note

    Martens painted several views of Mosman Bay from The Rangers, Oswald Bloxsome’s Sydney house but only after the return to England in 1850 of Oswald Brierly, an artist-friend of Bloxsome’s who stayed at a small cottage on the estate in the 1840s. Martens also sold pictures of Mosman Bay and the house to its next occupant, Henry Stuart Russell -- Conrad Martens: life and art / Elizabeth Ellis, 1994, p.165

    Account book, 1 Jan. 1848 `J. Stirling Esq. 2 views (coloured sketches) of his place £2.2.0, the latter now in NLA. Pencil drawing, `Mossman’s [sic] Bay J. Stirling Esq D[ecember] 27/43, title and date lower right, inscribed in another hand (R.T. Carter?) `Old Mossman [sic] Bay, not Ben Boyd - another Whale ship owner. Ship hove down by the windlass sunk in wharf ..’, 20.1 x 31 cm., DL PX 25, f.10.
