  • General note

    Titled at lower centre.
Captain Robert FitzRoy abducted four Tierra del Fuegians in early 1830 as a reprisal against the theft of the HMS Beagle's whale boat by related Fuegians when the ship's crew were camped on shore. FitzRoy decided to take the captives to England to civilise them. One of the four, Boat Memory, died of smallpox in early 1831. The remaining three, York Minster, James Button and Fuegia Basket were educated and introduced to society, even presented at court to King William IV and Queen Adelaide in 1831. They were returned to Tierra del Fuego in 1833. It is likely that this lithograph was published to coincide with the interest in them in England, possibly issued around the time of their Royal visit.
-- Reference: Narrative of the surveying voyages of his Majesty's ships Adventure and the Beagle, between the years 1826 and 1836: describing their examination of the southern shores of South America and the Beagle's circumnavigation of Globe, London: Henry Colburn, 1839.
The Library holds 2 other coloured pencil drawings of Jemmy Button and Fuegia Basket, one of which is signed R. Day? 1830 (PXC 284, F.13 & 14). On stylistic grounds it would appear that the artist of these drawings was also the artist of the drawings reproduced in the lithograph, although they are not the basis of the print.
