    At PXn 602 is a photograph of the original ink inscriptions on the back of the canvas, which were covered when the painting was laid onto masonite. At the lower left is 'W.P. Wilshire / pinx. 1886. / AEtat 78." At lower right is "Aborigines of Queensland / from a Photograph." At lower centre is a label pasted onto the canvas which is addressed to the Trustees of the Mitchell Library, as a direction for the painting's donation to the Library. The label, from Mrs John Bibb, of Mosman, is dated "3.9.19" or 3 September 1919.
