Charles Boydell emigrated to New South Wales in 1826 accompanied by George Townshend, a fellow resident from the Welsh village of Rossett, and both took up land grants on the Allyn River at Gresford, NSW. On his farm, Camyr Allyn, Boydell ran sheep and cattle and grew wheat, corn, tobacco and grapes. In 1837 he married Elizabeth Macdonald Ritchie, daughter of Harriott Mary Dowling and grand-daughter of John and Harriott Blaxland of Newington, Sydney.

intermittent diary entries between 1 March 1830 and 8 November 1834 in which he records farming and social activities, his travels in the district and further afield to Sydney, Windsor, Liverpool, the Illawarra, and a journey to the Riley family station near Yass; a 'New South Wales Aboriginal Vocabulary collected from Jacky King of [?]' (pages 52a-53a); an account of a battle between two aboriginal groups (pages 75a-76a); an account of 'King Jackey's Funeral', 19 August 1833 (pages 36-38); livestock records; lists of grape varieties planted; accounts and receipts (between 15 February 1830 and 3 November 1835) for payments and rations given to workers including carpenters, fencers and sawyers; copies of letters sent; copy of power of attorney assigned to his father in England; verse; pencil drawings - System of arrangementThe journal has been written in from both ends and was paginated in the Library after acquisition into two sequences; the first diary entry, dated 1 March 1830, is page 1, then 2, 3, etc., from the other end the sequence is 1a, 2a, 3a, etc.

The Aboriginal vocabulary in Boydell's journal is very similar to 'Vocabulary of the Allyn River Black's Language' located at CY 2355, frames 88-115 (Aa 52).
The original volume (A 2014) was copied onto preservation microfilm (CY 1496) in Apr. 1989.
