  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Anne Bickford is a professional archaeologist and museologist who researches, publishes and consults in Australian colonial archaeology and contact history. She is a member of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists (AACA) which she chaired from 1993-1994. She was also a member of the federally commissioned Committee of Inquiry on Museums and National Collections, who in 1975 released the controversial "Pigott" report. In this report Bickford questioned the historical authenticity of two living history museums, Old Sydney Town and Lachlan Vintage Village.

Bickford was Curator of Applied Arts at the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (later The Powerhouse Museum), later setting up her own consultancy practice. Archaeological projects she has worked on include the excavation of the First Government House site in Sydney and the site of Paramatta Observatory.

Bickford has also been an active campaigner for numerous social issues including the rights of women and Indigenous Australians. She was an active member in the music and feminist scene of the 1970s in Sydney, performing in bands The Early Kookas and The Bopcats. She mixed with prominent artists, poets and feminists of the time such as Pamela Brown, Joanne Burns and Lyndall Ryan.
