The letters of John Towers (known as Jack),to Emmie Aslin begin in 1907 and end in 1936. Towers was a shearer who worked in sheds in Walcha, Narrabri, Moree, Forbes, and Wellington, before joining the army in 1916. Jack and Emmie married before Towers sailed with the 19th Battalion, 5th Infantry Brigade on Transport A.31 in July 1916. After training on Salisbury Plain in England Private Towers sailed for France at the end of October. After being hit by shrapnel in May 1917 he was briefly treated in an army hospital at Rouen. Towers sailed from England for home in January 1918 and resumed work as an itinerant shearer. Emmie worked for many years for the Stewart family in Sydney, and there are a few letters from a very young James Stewart to Nur (Emmie) and Wowser (Jack). Stewart later became professor of Archaeology at Sydney University
