  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Dr Archibald McLean was chief medical officer and bacteriologist on the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-14 (AAE) under Douglas Mawson. He was one of a party of six who waited for Mawson's return once the 'Aurora' had departed with the rest of the crew and endured another Antarctic winter as a result.
  • Scope and Content
The scrapbook contains photographs, newcuttings, ephemeral material and correspondence mainly relating to the AAE.
The newscuttings cover Mclean's departure from Sydney, the 'Aurora', reports of the first wires from Mawson upon completion of the telegraph, news of the deaths of Ninnis and Mertz and the additional winter spent in Antarctica. The photographs include shots of the 'Aurora', working inside the hut, Frank Hurley (in civilian clothes) ca. 1917, landscapes and field work.

Two letters are of particular significance: the first from T.W. Edgeworth David acknowledging receipt of McLean's application to join the expedition (29 Aug. 1911) and the second from Mawson confirming McLean's appointment to the expedition (23 Sep. 1911).
The ephemera includes invitations to fund-raising lunches and dinners and one to Mawson's wedding. Also included are documents relating to the award of a Military Cross to McLean in 1918 and a double portrait of McLean in army uniform, ca. 1917.
