  • General note

Previously titled, Arrival of Burke & Wills at Flinders River 1861, 1862 / J. Greig
"One of the few pictures, painted in the immediate aftermath of the expedition, showing the explorers triumphant rather than the circumstances surrounding their deaths. When Greig showed this picture in Melbourne late in 1862, the Age criticized him for straying `too far into the imaginative' by depicting Burke and Wills actually sighting the open sea." -- Bonyhady, T. Burke & Wills: from Melbourne to myth. Balmain: David Ell Press, 1991
