  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1866 a cricket team comprising Aborigines from western Victoria was formed by cricketer and footballer, T. W. (Thomas) Wills. He was captain of the team and organised two tours of major towns and cities in Victoria and New South Wales. The first match was played against Melbourne Cricket Club and Wills' last match with the team was against a N.S.W. XI, played at the Albert Ground, Redfern, on 22-23 April 1867. Charles Lawrence was then appointed to coach the Aboriginal team in mid-1867. He had come out to Australia with the first English cricket team in 1862. At the end of the tour he remained behind to coach the Albert Club in Sydney. Lawrence joined Wills in the Aboriginal team for several matches during April 1867. He then captained the team for most of the remainder of their domestic tour, culminating with a match against an Army and Navy XI in Sydney on 4-5 February 1868. Three days later the team, led by Lawrence, sailed for their historic tour of England.
