  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Mary Reibey (nee Haydock) arrived in Sydney from England in 1792 having been sentenced to seven years transportation for theft. In 1794 she married Thomas Reibey, a merchant and landholder. After his death in 1811 she became a prosperous businesswoman in her own right with interests in trading vessels and property.
  • Scope and Content
Manuscript journal, 20 June 1820-7 July 1821, written on paper of various sizes, enclosed in board cover inscribed in Reibey's hand 'Journal M. Reibey June 21st 1820'; later rebound for David Scott Mitchell by Corbett Binder, Sydney. Reibey documents her visit to England with her daughters Celia and Elizabeth. They visited many relatives in Lancashire, had their portraits painted in Glasgow and went to the theatre in London. In April 1821 Reibey made arrangements for a return voyage on the ship Mariner, which also carried John Edward Cox and his family to Sydney. During the long wait for the ship to leave she bought goods for herself and for her shop in Sydney. The ship finally left England in July 1821. In the journal Reibey does not mention her convict past.
Also included in the volume is 'A Copy from an abridgement of an examination before the Prison Committee of the House of Commons during the year last', being extracts copied by Reibey from 'A Letter to Earl Bathurst' by H. Grey Bennet, published London, James Ridgway, 1820. The section copied discusses the evidence of Alexander Riley to the House of Commons Select Committee on the State of Gaols, 1819. It concerns the appointment of emancipists as magistrates and solicitors. Reibey also copied four letters reproduced in the appendix of Bennet's book: 1. letter from Lachlan Macquarie to George Howe, 21 Feb. 1819, concerning the dismissal of George Williams, compositor at the Sydney Gazette; 2. letter from Samuel Marsden to William Wilberforce, 5 Feb. 1818, concerning complaints against Lachlan Macquarie; 3. letter from Samuel Marsden to Alexander Riley (here spelt Ryley), 19 May 1818, complaining of his removal from the magistracy; 4. letter from William Henry Moore to Jeffery Hart Bent, 5 Mar. 1816, complaining that the Governor has discontinued his (Moore's) salary as a magistrate.
