John Gilmour Lockley (1865-1937), bookseller, publisher and journalist, was born at Waterloo in 1865. In 1878 he began work in the bookshop of Mr William Maddock, where he stayed for 17 years. He then worked at Angus & Robertson until 1907, where he would have met Henry Lawson. He wrote gardening columns for newspapers under the name "Florist" and "Redgum", and was Director of the Lockley Library. He was a member of the Ku-ring-gai Shire Council for 12 years and its president for one term. Lockley died in 1937.

Henry Lawson wrote these letters to Lockley from Darlinghurst Gaol.
