Governor Macquarie initiated the distribution of blankets to Aborginal people at the first Parramatta Feast in December 1814. These blankets were to replace the traditional animal skin cloaks usually worn. To account for expenditure, Government officials created what are called "Blanket lists" which often included details of people's English name, Native name, Probably age, Number of wives, Children, Tribe, and District of Usual Resort (Indigenous Services Librarian, Mitchell Library, 2005).
See article 'How a 150-year-old blanket can help settle a native title claim', Sydney Morning Herald, 13 September 2005, p.14.
Original volume copied onto preservation microfilm, July 1997, and included as item 21 on the 1997 'Select List of Records on Microfilm: Australian Aboriginal Peoples' (150 items), available for purchase from the Mitchell Library.
