  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Society was formed on 5 July 1822 and Samuel Marsden was Senior Vice-President. As early as 1811 he sent the colony's first commercial shipment of wool to England and continued to play a prominent role in the development of agriculture in New South Wales.

  • Scope and Content
    Coffee jug (a) has an inverted pear shaped body on stepped, plain, circular base. Hinged flat lid with floral finial, raised broad spout with reeding around the rim. Wooden handle with acanthus leaf attachments. The jug is engraved with a sheep above the inscription.
    Stand (b) has circular reeded stand with gadrooned rim and three cast paw feet with tudor rose and acanthus decoration.

    Jug was made in 1823 by Benjamin Smith, London. Marks: BS, lion passant, date letter H, king's head, leopard's head.
    Stand was made in 1820 by John Houle, London. Marks: IH, king's head, lion passant, date letter e.
