  The elaborate gesso and gilt frame was made by in Sydney by Edwin Baldwin and commended by the New South Wales Commissioners of Exposition Universelle de Paris, 1855 -- Reference Catalogue of the ... Products of N.S.W. ... in the Australian Museum ... 1854, Sydney, pp. 79, 81, 87 (located at DSM Q606/N)
  
  The painting is also visible in photographs of the interior of Mitchell's home at 17 Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst (see ML V1/Res/Mit/6b). However it seems the portrait was removed from the Art Gallery, as it was offered on loan to the Library by Mr E.R.H. Merewether (Mitchell's great-grandson) in 1944. In 1965 the portrait was presented to the Library by the E.C. Merewether Estate Trustees.
