  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Thomas Bock, portrait painter, engraver and photographer was born in England in 1790. He arrived in Hobart in 1824 as a convict having been sentenced to 14 years transportation for 'administering drugs to procure an abortion'. He built up a reputation as a portrait painter and engraver and in 1832 was granted a free pardon. He is well known for a series of portraits of indigenous Tasmanians and also for the series of sketches he did of condemned prisoners both before and after their executions. He died in 1855.
  • Scope and Content
The album is bound in black leather tooled in blind and gold. There are 26 ff. in the volume. One sketch (f.14) has an unfinished sketch of three men sitting at a table on the reverse. Some of the titles appear to overwrite earlier titles, and one (f.10) replaces the same title that has been erased and is still visble. Titles for f.9 and f.18 are in a different hand, and the titles for ff.8, 13, 22-26 may be in a third hand. Measurements are taken from inside the mounts.
