Charles Vincent Monaghan, a farmer of Nowra, New South Wales was born on 8 August 1884 at Mayfield, near Nowra. He enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps as a stretcher bearer on 15 July 1915, aged 30. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A26 Armadale, 21 March 1916, disembarked in Egypt on 23 April, and entrained for Tel el Kebir. With 3000 other men Monaghan landed at Marseilles on 16 May and Etaples on 21 May. He returned to Australia on the Beltana, 19 July 1919.
