Microfilms

The Australian Joint Copying Project (AJCP) was established in 1945, to microfilm records relating to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, held in repositories in the United Kingdom. Filming prior to 1960 focussed mainly on the Public Record Office (PRO microfilm series). From 1960 onwards the AJCP extended its coverage to records held in other repositories and in private homes. These records dating from 1560 to 1984, form the Miscellaneous or 'M' series of microfilms. Filming ceased in 1993 and the last film was issued in 1997. The project operated for almost 50 years during which time it produced and distributed over 10,000 reels to libraries and archives in Australia and New Zealand. From 1945 to 1988, the State Library of New South Wales was a joint administering partner of the Project along with the National Library of Australia, and holds a complete set of the AJCP microfilms.

Records which have been filmed are listed and described in published Handbooks produced by the Project. The main guide is: Australian Joint Copying Project, 3rd ed., National Library of Australia, 1998, with various supplements.
