    "W.L. [whole length] portrait of a man walking in profile to the r. [right] In his r. hand he holds a botanic drawing, in his l. [left] a magnifying glass or lorgnette. His gouty r. leg is swathed ; from his r. wrist hangs a knotted walking stick. A portrait of Joseph (afterwards Sir Joseph) Banks ... who at this time had recently returned from his expedition with Solander, ... to Iceland."

  • General note

    Matthew Darly was a well-known London satirical artist, and publisher of satirical prints with a print shop at 39 The Strand. Darley issued a series of Macaronis or satirical prints of prominent public figures, which were displayed in his shop window.
    According to Harold B. Carter (author of Sir Joseph Banks, 1743-1820. London : British Museum. Natural History, 1988), Banks' first attack of gout occurred in 1787.
    The Library also holds an etching of "The Simpling Macaroni" (Portrait of Dr. Solander) from a series published by Darly in July 1772. (P2/278)
